SoC Week

By Steve Teo | September 2, 2009

SoC Week was back again! This August, SoC Week was revived again since it was last organized two years ago. It was a week filled with fun activities and free goodies, where the objective was to make SoC-ians feel pampered!

The event started off with a ‘Guess the Cheezels’ Contest, where students were to guess the number of packets of Cheezels that were mounted outside Seminar Room 1. Following that was the SoC Mama Shop free snacks give-away. A variety of snacks was up for grabs, and SoC-ians felt that they were back to childhood all over again! Not forgetting the geeks we are, Kaspersky Labs was also invited to distribute the license keys for their latest antivirus software.

SoC Night, the finale night that marks the end of the exciting week, received overwhelming response from over 200 students. It was collaboration between CompClub, CISAA and SoC External Relations (previously known as Corporate Communication), and we were honoured to have Mr Oliver Tian, President of the Computer and Information Science Alumni Association, as the guest-of-honour of the night. We were honoured to also have the alumni speakers to speak to the students. After a series of fun-filled activities, participants were treated to a sumptuous buffer dinner proudly sponsored by SoC External Relations.

The night was concluded with a Lucky Draw segment, where eleven prizes worth over $1000 were given out to lucky participants, as well as prize presentation ceremony for the ‘SoC Moments’ Photography Competition and ‘Guess the Cheezels’ Contest.

Welfare Pack + Refreshment area

By Steve Teo | April 25, 2009

As with traditions, Exam Welfare Packs were distributed to the student population of SoC this AY on November 2008 and April 2009 respectively. The welfare packs were issued on the 22nd of April and it was a tremendous success as all 250 packs were given out in a short time span of an hour.  The objectives of the packs were to provide a level of welfare for students during the examination period.

Goodies that were included in the packs include perishable food items, stationeries, Gatsby facial products and magazines. One mentionable gift is the folded cranes that were made for students as a good luck charm for their exams.

In addition to just providing the welfare packs, we also set up a refreshment area for the students. We introduced the event with the aim of providing the students with food to keep them energetic while they are studying hard. This is our way of showing we care. There were snacks as well as drinks, and even cup noodles available at the refreshment area. It was a huge success as we managed to clear almost all our food in the end. The Main Committee also took the effort to distribute the refreshments to students personally.

Overall, the event was a huge success and we received lots of positive feedback at the end of it.

Survey on Webcast for Lectures (During Midterm Examination Week)

By Steve Teo | March 23, 2009

Greetings SoCians,

During the mid-term examination week, NUS Students’ Computing Club worked with professors to make available recorded webcasts for lectures that week. We believe that this move will help students to better focus on their examinations while stay on track for newer materials at the same time. By initiating this, students will be able to catch up easily from the lectures they might have left early on.

Your feedback will be invaluable in improving this initiative when we implement it again. We kindly request for your assistance in completing the survey at the following url.
